Fort the first South American Olympic Games, 10,500 athletes from 206 nations will compete in 306 events across 42 sports. Rio has struggled to prepare amid controversies, but the 16 day ‘greatest show on Earth’ will open officially on Friday.

Rio’s final preparations are ended…

It’s the final days before the 2016 Olympics, and while athletes are arriving and training for the events, final preparations are still underway to finish the facilities and prepare the sites for the Olympic Games.

Security

Brazil is the first South American country to host the games. Security for the event is very tight and armed soldiers and police can be seen everywhere.

Athletes’ village

Members of Argentina’s Olympic team are greeted by a troupe of Brazilian dancers as they arrive at a welcome ceremony held at the athletes’ village. There are 3,604 apartments in the Olympic village. Over the course of the games, 2,488 medals will be awarded: 812 gold, 812 silver and 864 bronze.

The athletes have been taking the opportunity to practise in the event areas where possible, despite the contruction going on around them.

Fans

Up to 380,000 foreign spectators are expected to arrive in Rio during the Games. Fans who have come to Rio for the Games are already getting into the spirit of things.
